Bahrain Property Law · Tenancy

Does a lease have to be in writing in Bahrain?

Yes. All leases subject to the Property Rent Law must be in writing and must specify the lease period and the rent payable. A handshake tenancy has no standing, and an incomplete contract invites disputes the law was designed to prevent.

Beyond the two mandatory elements - period and rent - a good Bahrain lease spells out the property address, payment schedule, deposit amount, who bears maintenance, and who pays the municipality fee if the tenant is an expatriate.

Once written, register it within one month: that single step activates the rent caps, eviction protections and deposit limits on the rest of this page.
